I consider this the most critical section of the NVCP, containing the key settings that apply to every Nvidia GPU user, providing the greatest control over performance and image quality in games. To prevent this guide from becoming overwhelmingly lengthy, only the 3D Settings section of the Nvidia Control Panel is covered in detail below.

If the Nvidia Control Panel is missing important files, giving errors, or otherwise behaving strangely, do a clean installation as covered on, then download and install the latest GeForce driver package. See the Advanced Tweaking section for more details. If the Nvidia Control Panel won't open when launched, open the Services utility (Start>Services.msc) and make sure the 'Nvidia Display Driver Service' is set to Automatic or Manual, not Disabled. You can also right-click on this file and select Send To>Desktop to create a shortcut.

If you wish to prevent the Nvidia tray item from loading up in the background at each Windows startup, see the Advanced Tweaking section later in this guide. To show or hide the Nvidia tray item in the Notification Area you can tick or untick the 'Show Notification Tray Icon' item under the Desktop menu at the top of the Nvidia Control Panel. If the Nvidia icon is visible in the Notification Area at the bottom right of the screen, click on it and select 'Open Nvidia Control Panel'.This will remove the Nvidia Control Panel icon in the Windows Control Panel, but will not remove the program from your system. If you wish to remove this component from the Windows Control Panel, delete the following Registry key using Registry Editor: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ControlPanel\NameSpace\. Open the Windows Control Panel and select the 'Nvidia Control Panel' component.If you wish to add/remove this context menu entry at any time, you can tick or untick the 'Add Desktop Context Menu' item under the Desktop menu at the top of the Nvidia Control Panel.
